i. The Fool's Fall
ii. The Landing
The Ramayanaरामायण, "Rama's journey" is one of the two great Sanskrit epics of India — alongside the Mahabharata — telling the story of Prince Rama, exiled from his kingdom for fourteen years, whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon-king Ravana, and who wages war to win her back with the help of the monkey-general Hanuman. It was composed roughly 2,500 years ago and has since travelled across Asia in dozens of local retellings — in Indonesia specifically as the Kakawin Ramayana, an Old Javanese poem written in Central Java over a thousand years ago, which still lives today in temple relief carvings, shadow-puppet theatre (wayang kulit), and open-air dance-drama.
Sukarno (1901–1970) was Indonesia's first president (1945–1967), the man who proclaimed independence from the Dutch on 17 August 1945. He was famous even to political opponents for his oratory, and — as the record below shows clearly — for reaching for wayang and Ramayana imagery as a working political vocabulary, not decoration. What could not be pinned down in this descent is one single, dated, transcribable "radio announcement... about the Ramayana" matching the hole as posed. That gap is held open honestly in §v below, rather than papered over with the adjacent, well-documented material that does exist.
iii. Sukarno and the Ramayana — what the record actually supports
Three separate, well-sourced threads sit under this hole. None of them, individually, is the verbatim radio transcript the hole asks for — but together they are the honest shape of "Sukarno + Ramayana + broadcast Indonesia."
1. Sukarno as patron of the Prambanan Ramayana Ballet (1961). The Sendratari Ramayana Prambanan — an open-air dance-drama staged against the ninth-century Prambanan temple complex, whose outer walls already carry a full Ramayana relief cycle carved circa 850 CE — was conceived by Major General GPH Djatikusumo (then Minister of Land Transport, Post, Telecommunications and Tourism) after he watched Cambodia's Royal Ballet perform at Angkor Wat in 1960 and wanted an Indonesian answer to it. It was formally inaugurated on 26 July 1961 by Djatikusumo, with the opening address given by Prof. Dr. Soeharso (organising-committee chair and choreographer). President Sukarno attended a subsequent gala premiere on 25 August 1961 with five cabinet ministers, sixteen ambassadors, and roughly fifty other VIP guests — among them Charlie Chaplin, then 72, who reportedly told organisers he would carry word of Indonesian artistry back to the world, and singled out dancer Retno Maruti's performance as showing extraordinary natural talent. Sukarno did not deliver a speech that evening captured in the sources found — he inscribed a commemorative plaque: "Balet Ramayana Prambanan adalah satu pertjobaan (good effort) untuk membawa seni-pentas Indonesia ke taraf yang lebih tinggi" — "The Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan is an earnest effort to bring Indonesian performing arts to a higher level." No source located in this descent confirms the plaque text or the evening's remarks were carried live over Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), though RRI is independently documented as the standard state channel for exactly this kind of prestige cultural event during the period — see the open question in §v.
2. Sukarno's general, well-documented habit of using wayang/Ramayana grammar as political grammar. Multiple sources describe Sukarno — raised on wayang performance from childhood — as governing rhetorically the way a dalang (puppet-master) runs a wayang show: finding the "common denominator" that lets an audience read a real, messy conflict as a clean moral one. Scholarship on his "Guided Democracy" period (1959–1966) treats this as more than metaphor: his speeches regularly reached for the wayang stock of good-versus-evil, hero-versus-demon framing to narrate Indonesia's post-independence struggles — most visibly in his coinage of NEKOLIM (neo-kolonialisme, kolonialisme, imperialisme — "neo-colonialism, colonialism, imperialism") as the named enemy of his "NEFO" (New Emerging Forces) bloc, opposed to the Western "OLDEFO" (Old Established Forces). No single source in this descent produces a verbatim passage in which Sukarno names Rahwana (Ravana) specifically as the personification of Nekolim, or Rama as Indonesia, though it is the kind of substitution the wayang-political-grammar scholarship implies was live in his rhetorical toolkit generally, applied across many wayang figures, not only the Ramayana cast. Flagged as a plausible-but-unconfirmed inference — see §v.
3. RRI as the physical channel. Radio Republik Indonesia, founded 11 September 1945 (weeks after independence), was the state broadcaster through which Sukarno's major addresses reached the archipelago — including, per one widely repeated detail, the fact that the "proclamation recording" most Indonesians have heard since childhood was not captured live on 17 August 1945 at all, but re-recorded by Sukarno's own voice at an RRI studio in 1951. RRI under Guided Democracy functioned explicitly as a mobilising instrument for state ideology, carrying Sukarno's Independence Day addresses (e.g. the 17 August 1963 "Genta Suara Revolusi" — "Bell of the Revolution's Voice" — speech) to the nation live. This establishes the channel is real and the practice of broadcasting Sukarno's set-piece cultural and political addresses over RRI is real — but again, this descent did not turn up a named, dated RRI broadcast whose subject was the Ramayana specifically.
iv. The Ramayana itself — story, structure, meaning
Authorship and date. Traditionally credited to the sage Valmiki, composed roughly in the mid-first millennium BCE (scholarly estimates vary considerably; the first and last of its seven books are generally agreed to be later additions to an older core). It runs to nearly 24,000 verses (shlokas) across seven kandasbooks/cantos — Bala, Ayodhya, Aranya, Kishkindha, Sundara, Yuddha, and Uttara Kanda.
The story, in one breath. Prince Rama of Ayodhya is exiled for fourteen years by his father's promise to a scheming stepmother, Kaikeyi, who wants the throne for her own son. Rama goes into the forest with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. There the demon-king of Lanka, Ravana, abducts Sita. Rama allies with the monkey-king Sugriva and his devoted general Hanuman, builds a causeway to Lanka, and defeats Ravana in a climactic war, freeing Sita and returning to Ayodhya to rule as the model just king — the reign that gives Indian political thought its benchmark term Rāmarājya, "the rule of Rama": a byword for a just, virtuous, well governed state.
What it means, at the level scholarship actually agrees on. The epic is a dharma text before it is an adventure — dharma here meaning duty/right conduct relative to one's role, not "morality" in the flattened Western sense. Every major character is written as an ideal-of-role: Rama the ideal son and king, Sita the ideal wife, Lakshmana the ideal brother, Hanuman the ideal servant/devotee. The war itself is secondary to what each character does or refuses to do inside their role under pressure. This is also why the epic keeps regenerating region-specific retellings rather than staying fixed — every culture that adopts it re-stages the role question in its own terms.
The etymology of the name itself. Rāmāyaṇa is a Sanskrit compound: Rāma (the name/hero) + ayana ("going, path, journey" — from the root i-, "to go"). The internal vowel sandhi (a + a → ā) that joins them is the same rule any Sanskrit compound obeys. The most common reading is "the journey/course of Rama"; a secondary, less common reading takes ayana in its sense of "abode, resting-place," giving "the abode/world of Rama" — both readings are attested in the literature, neither cancels the other; they are two facets of the same compound, not a dispute requiring a verdict here.
v. What's contested & unknown
- The specific "radio announcement about Ramayana" named in the hole was not located. This descent ran multiple English- and Indonesian-language passes (
Sukarno Ramayana pidato radio,Sukarno wayang Rahwana Nekolim,Sukarno Ramayana kebudayaan pidato kenegaraan) and reached strong adjacent material (§iii.1–3) without surfacing a dated, quotable transcript matching the hole. This is reported as a genuine gap, not silently patched with the adjacent Prambanan material — the plaque quote is real and sourced, but a plaque is not a radio broadcast, and the descent will not conflate the two. Update, 2026-07-18 deepening pass on a sibling hole: this is very likely the same speech. [runs/sukarno-negeri-utara-kuru.md](./sukarno-negeri-utara-kuru.md) transcribed and corrected the circulating "Negeri Utara Kuru" recording against five independent written sources and confirmed its opening line is "Kemarin aku baca Ramayana, saudara-saudara, Ramayana!" ("Yesterday I read the Ramayana, brothers and sisters, the Ramayana!") — i.e. Sukarno reading/citing the Ramayana aloud to a crowd. Two independent transcribers there date it to a Maulid Nabi Muhammad address (one says 1963, the other 1964 — year still unresolved), not a dedicated "radio announcement," but it is the strongest single candidate found across both descents for what the hole was pointing at. Still not archivally confirmed (ANRI unopened in both passes) — read the full breakdown there before treating this as settled. - Where the actual artifact likely lives, if it exists: the Indonesian National Archives (ANRI — Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia) hold a dedicated Sukarno presidential-speech archive (
pusdipres.anri.go.id) and an active UNESCO Memory of the World register entry for his speeches; RRI's own historical archive and the Ministry of Information's Guided-Democracy-eraPidato-Pidato Presidencompilations, and the "Di Bawah Bendera Revolusi" printed speech collections, are the next tier to search — none were reachable as full-text within this descent (open web only; no archive-request or on-site access attempted). This is the honest ceiling: the next deepening pass on this hole starts at ANRI, not at another web search. - The Rahwana-as-Nekolim reading (§iii.2) is inference, not sourced fact. Scholarship documents the wayang-political-grammar habit broadly and documents Nekolim as a named rhetorical device; no source found actually walks the two together onto the Ramayana cast specifically (versus the much larger wayang universe of hundreds of characters Sukarno also drew on). Held explicitly as plausible-but-unconfirmed, not asserted as established.
- Whether the 25 August 1961 Prambanan gala was broadcast on RRI — genuinely unknown from sources reached; plausible given RRI's documented role covering prestige state cultural events of the period, but unconfirmed for this specific evening.
A pocket of wonder
vi. The Kakawin Ramayana — Indonesia's own text, not a translation
Worth holding apart from the "translation of the Ramayana" framing in the hole: Indonesia's own Ramayana is not simply a Sanskrit-to-Malay/Javanese translation of Valmiki. The Kakawin Ramayana, composed in Central Java in Old Javanese (Kawi) between roughly 856 and 930 CE (translator Stuart Robson's dating), is written in kakawin metre — the Javanese adaptation of Sanskrit kāvya courtly-verse form. Textual scholarship traces its first half closely to the Sanskrit Bhaṭṭikāvya (a 6th–7th century poem by the Indian poet Bhaṭṭi that tells the Rama story partly as a vehicle for grammar instruction), while its second half diverges substantially from any known Indian source — Javanese invention, not corrupted transmission. Most strikingly, it introduces Semar and his three sons — collectively the Punokawan, the clown-servant figures — who exist nowhere in Valmiki or Bhaṭṭi and are a purely Javanese theological addition: Semar is read in Javanese cosmology as a god in disguise, socially low but spiritually senior to the princes he serves. These added scenes became, per the sources, the most popular material in wayang performance — the Javanese Ramayana is loved partly for the parts India never wrote. The text is considered by Javanese literary tradition "the pinnacle of artistic expression" among all surviving kakawin of the Hindu-Buddhist period, and it is this text — not a Sanskrit import — that underlies the temple reliefs at Prambanan and the dance-drama Sukarno patronised in 1961.
